Hadia — Jocelyn Chouinard
Hadia, born Jocelyn Chouinard, was a Canadian performer and educator whose career spanned almost four decades. She began dancing as a teenager and eventually entered professional nightclub performance in Vancouver before expanding her studies internationally. Hadia trained with influential teachers including Ibrahim Farrah and spent substantial time researching and studying Middle Eastern dance traditions. She later qualified as a physical therapist, allowing her to combine anatomical knowledge with decades of dance experience. This combination resulted in a distinctive teaching methodology focused on safe technique, efficient movement and long-term dancer health. Hadia became an internationally respected master instructor and teacher trainer before her death in May 2022.

Bert Balladine
Bert Balladine was one of the most influential male figures in the early development of belly dance in the United States. His background included circus, ballet and theatrical performance before he encountered Middle Eastern dance during travels that included Egypt in the late 1950s. Balladine subsequently developed a long career as a performer, choreographer and highly sought-after teacher. His theatrical training allowed him to approach Oriental dance through stagecraft, dramatic presence and structured movement while still encouraging students to understand Middle Eastern music. He taught generations of dancers in the United States and internationally and helped legitimise male participation within a field that Western audiences often assumed to be exclusively female. Balladine died in 2009, but his pedagogical influence remains embedded in several branches of American belly-dance history.

Hoda Shams El Din
Hoda Shams El Din was an Egyptian dancer and actress of Armenian heritage who became part of the country's Golden Era entertainment scene. She studied at an Armenian school in Cairo before entering the professional performing world. Director Niazi Mustafa reportedly played an important role in recognising her potential, and she later worked within Badia Masabni's famous entertainment environment. From the mid-1940s onward, Hoda appeared in Egyptian films as both a dancer and actress. Her surviving screen work documents the polished cabaret and cinematic aesthetic that was developing around Raqs Sharqi during that period. Her career makes her particularly valuable to Raqs Atlas as one of the numerous Golden Era professionals whose influence has often been overshadowed by the extraordinary fame of Samia Gamal and Tahia Carioca.
