Tribal Fusion
Tribal Fusion is a modern belly dance style that evolved from American Tribal Style and blends belly dance technique with elements from contemporary dance, hip-hop, popping, flamenco, Indian dance, jazz, and other movement traditions. It is known for strong muscular control, precise isolations, layered movement, dramatic musical interpretation, and a highly individual artistic aesthetic. Unlike group improvisational ATS, Tribal Fusion is often choreographed and performed solo, although group work is also common.
Movement
Slow controlled isolations, body waves, chest and hip locks, layered shimmies, serpentine arms, muscular undulations, sharp accents, and fluid-to-staccato transitions. Popping-inspired contractions, intricate torso control, and deliberate use of pauses are also common.
Costume
Layered, textured, and highly stylized. Typical costumes may include fitted tops, coin or textile belts, layered skirts, harem pants, leggings, tassels, fringe, tribal-style jewelry, cuffs, headpieces, boots, and dark or earthy color palettes. Many dancers also use gothic, steampunk, contemporary, or avant-garde elements, so costume design varies widely by performer and concept.
