Nejla Ateş

Nejla Ateş became one of the most internationally visible Turkish Oriental dancers of the mid-twentieth century. Born in Constanța, she developed her career as a Turkish performer and eventually achieved considerable fame in the United States. Her appearances included American film and Broadway, exposing Western audiences to a highly theatricalised image of Turkish dance. She was frequently marketed through the exoticising language typical of her era. Despite that context, her success makes her a significant figure in the international history of Turkish Oryantal and its early global circulation.
