Biography

Mahmoud Reda was one of the central architects of modern Egyptian theatrical folk dance. He co-founded the Reda Troupe in 1959 and developed choreography inspired by field observations of dances and movement traditions from across Egypt. Rather than simply copying community dances, Reda adapted movement for theatrical spacing, ensemble work and stage presentation. His company became internationally prominent and shaped how generations of dancers outside Egypt learned to recognise Egyptian regional styles. His influence is so extensive that Reda technique must be understood as its own theatrical system rather than treated as an unchanged version of Egyptian folklore.
