Biography

Elena Lentini began studying with Ibrahim Farrah in New York in 1968 and became one of the most distinctive artists to emerge from his circle. During the 1970s she performed both in Middle Eastern nightclubs and in prestigious theatrical venues. Her work appeared in productions at venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall and the Kennedy Center. Lentini brought experience with mime, theatre and experimental movement into her interpretation of Oriental dance. Rather than treating Raqs Sharqi purely as nightclub entertainment, she explored character, dramatic intention and theatrical composition. She later became an influential teacher and mentor whose work is remembered for expanding the artistic possibilities of American Oriental dance.
