Biography
Suraya Hilal was born in Cairo and later developed an international dance career that became particularly influential in the United Kingdom. Drawing on Egyptian movement culture as well as formal studies in Western dance and other physical disciplines, she developed an approach that moved beyond conventional nightclub Raqs Sharqi. During the 1980s she established major performance and educational projects in London. Her work eventually became known as **Hilal ****Dance**, a contemporary dance language rooted in Egyptian movement principles while designed for theatrical and holistic practice. Hilal has taught extensively across Europe and other parts of the world and influenced a substantial network of teachers. Her career is particularly important for discussions about how Egyptian-rooted movement can develop into a contemporary artistic system without being presented as traditional folklore.
