About
Biography
Orit Maftsir is an internationally recognised Oriental dancer particularly associated with the elegant aesthetics of Egyptian Golden Era cinema. Her artistic development was strongly influenced by old Egyptian films and the movement quality of dancers such as Samia Gamal and Tahia Carioca. Rather than simply reproducing vintage choreography, she developed a personal stage approach that evokes the atmosphere and sophistication of that period. Orit also became closely associated with the Eilat Festival of Oriental Dance, one of the region's major belly-dance gatherings. Her work as both performer and organiser helped create opportunities for international teachers and dancers to meet in Israel. She is especially relevant to Raqs Atlas as an example of how Golden Era aesthetics continue to inspire contemporary artists outside Egypt.
