About

Biography

Nelly Fouad was born in Alexandria and entered professional dance unusually young, joining an Awalim troupe while still in school. She initially developed her reputation in Lebanon before returning to Egypt and becoming part of Cairo's professional Raqs Sharqi scene. Her best-documented period of prominence spans the late 1970s and 1980s. Nelly studied with influential figures including Raqia Hassan and became known for movement choices that reflected the changing Egyptian style of that period. Historical analysis of her performances identifies innovations in hip articulation and the increasingly dynamic physical vocabulary that distinguished later Raqs Sharqi from Golden Era film dancing. Although less internationally famous than Fifi Abdou or Nagwa Fouad, her surviving recordings make her important for understanding the technical evolution of Egyptian dance.
