About
Biography
Carolina Varga Dinicu, universally known in the dance community as Morocco or Aunt Rocky, began working professionally as an Oriental dancer in New York in 1960. She became one of the earliest American dancers to approach Middle Eastern and North African traditions through extensive travel and field research. Morocco documented performers, customs and regional dances at a time when reliable English-language information was extremely scarce. Her teaching consistently challenged romanticised myths and unsupported claims about belly-dance history. As both a veteran performer and researcher, she has had enormous influence on culturally grounded dance education in North America.
