About
Biography
Khyria Mazin is the last actively teaching representative of the renowned Banat Mazin family tradition of Luxor. She began dancing professionally as a teenager alongside older members of her family. International belly-dance communities frequently describe the Mazin tradition under the label *Ghawazee*, although the family's own performance context and local terminology are more specific and should be documented carefully. Khyria's movement vocabulary includes powerful hip work, shimmies, rhythmic footwork and a direct relationship with live Upper Egyptian music. Her importance is fundamentally different from that of a Cairo nightclub star because she represents a hereditary professional performance tradition rooted in Upper Egypt. Contemporary preservation projects have increasingly focused on documenting her knowledge so it is not lost as older professional family traditions disappear.
