Camelia of Cairo

Camelia began her professional career as a folkloric dancer in the late 1990s before moving into Raqs Sharqi. She became a professional performer in Cairo's high-level hotel and entertainment circuit. Her movement style has been described as energetic, surprising and distinctly personal compared with many other contemporary Egyptian performers. She also became an international teacher and a regular presence at major Egyptian dance festivals. Camelia represents an important stage in the evolution of Egyptian Raqs Sharqi from the late 1990s into the globally connected twenty-first-century scene.
