About

Biography

Amie Sultan is an Egyptian dancer whose professional foundation was originally classical ballet rather than Raqs Sharqi. She entered formal ballet training young and performed major roles before becoming increasingly interested in Egyptian dance and music. In 2014 she shifted her professional focus toward Raqs Sharqi. Her stage projects often reference Golden Era aesthetics and seek to present Egyptian dance within formal cultural and artistic venues. Sultan later founded initiatives including Tarab and the Taqseem Institute, which aim to research, document and elevate the cultural status of Egyptian dance. Her work has generated discussion because it deliberately challenges the social distinction between respected concert dance and the often-stigmatised profession of Raqs Sharqi in Egypt.
