Zar
dum tak rest
Time signature: usually 2/4 in Egyptian dance adaptations.
Origin
Egypt, Sudan and wider Northeast African ceremonial traditions
Where you hear it
Often taught to belly dancers as the slower, trance-oriented form of Ayyub. However, Zar is actually a ritual tradition rather than one single rhythm, and authentic zar ceremonies can contain several rhythmic patterns. For the Raqs Atlas database I would therefore keep Zar separate from Ayyub but explain the distinction.
