Simsimiyya

سمسمية (simsimiyya)

A small plucked lyre with an open, bright and rhythmic sound.

Egypt

Origin

The simsimiyya is a modern Egyptian member of the ancient lyre family. Lyres have existed in Egypt since antiquity, while the present folk simsimiyya became particularly associated with the Suez Canal cities, including Port Said, Ismailia and Suez. Egyptian sources describe its links with earlier Nubian lyre traditions. Ancient and historic lyres are well documented in Egypt.

Role in the dance

It is strongly associated with Canal-zone folklore rather than mainstream Raqs Sharqi. Its presence helps identify regional Egyptian music and is valuable for Raqs Atlas when distinguishing local dance traditions from generic “belly dance.”
