Egyptian accordions are modified so they can play the quarter tones of maqam, giving them a sound unlike any Western accordion.
Origin
European import, adapted in Egypt from the early 20th century and retuned for Arabic scales.
Role in the dance
The voice of baladi. A baladi progression built on accordion improvisation is one of the great tests of an Egyptian dancer.
